9 April 2008 Gauteng Member of Executive Council (MEC) for Housing Nomvula Mokonyane has announced the extension of the Alexandra Renewal Programme's life span to 2010. "The extension was primarily informed by the huge demand of adequate shelter and prolonged land acquisition processes," said Mokonyane. MEC Mokonyane and the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg , Amos Masondo, convened the Alexandra Renewal Project's Political Steering Committee meeting in Alexandra yesterday, 9 April 2008. The purpose of the steering committee is to exercise political oversight and decision making on the implementation of the project. Both Mayor Masondo and MEC Mokonyane reminded the meeting about the mandate of the Alexandra Renewal Project, which is being an intervention to deal with historical urban decay and deprivation in terms of infrastructure as well as human development. The meeting acknowledged progress that has been registered on the ground and that many projects were at an advance stage, with more unique housing projects being piloted in Alexandra. Masondo and Mokonyane also hailed the Alexandra Renewal Project as a success story, given the inroads it made in improving the local community's quality of life. There are best practices in the project such as community participation and the block by block approach. In paying attention to matters of safety, the meeting came up with mechanisms to look into issues of crime prevention. And the development of the Far East Police Station will be prioritised by engaging sister departments both in the province and nationally. With regard to vandalism, it was agreed that ward councillors should play a critical role in running community awareness programmes to ensure the protection of public facilities. "Communities will be mobilised to prevent any vandalism that may occur in these facilities," resolved the meeting. It was further agreed that a Local Economic Development (LED) Summit should be convened to develop strategies in unearthing the economic potential of Alexandra. The meeting also resolved that the issue of land acquisition and restitution should be treated with caution as this matter was resolved at national level. Property facility and management will receive attention so as to prevent these properties from dilapidation and decay. Other innovative ways will be explored on the management of these facilities, concluded the meeting. For more information:
