Housing MEC launches new housing project in Etwatwa

Gauteng MEC for Housing Nomvula Mokonyane launched a new housing project in Etwatwa Extension 36 in Ekurhuleni.

Mokonyane told the community of this area that apart from providing houses, it will help eradicate informal settlements.

The MEC added that about 500 houses will be constructed during this financial year. Approximately 17 million will be used to complete the whole project.

Already there are 1 214 stands in the as well as 1 413 informal structures and this has created an overflow of 200 families. But MEC Mokonyane said that already a site has been secured to accommodate the 200 families temporarily.

Ms Mokonyane also said together with Ekurhuleni council have drafted a plan to improve the quality of lives of the community of Etwatwa.

 About 20 % of toilets have been built, water installation, sewer installation and pump station have been completed on the Northern part of Etwatwa Extension 36 except in the southern part where the toilet construction still need to be completed before other services can be installed.

Already 1 316 applications have been received so far and 936 subsidies have bee approved. But then the MEC encouraged the community to apply for housing subsidies.

Ms Mokonyane once again issued a stern warning that communities should seize from selling their houses, but rather strive to improve their homes "because they are an investment". And bi-laws will be enforced to curb the erection of backyard shacks.
