MEC Mokonyane participate in the painting and plastering of houses

21 September 2004

The Gauteng Housing MEC Nomvula Mokonyane together with Sanlam representatives will visit the Letsema programme in Kagiso Extension 12 where she handed over 100 houses on 13 September 2005. This comes after government made a call encouraging public-private partnerships in the delivery of houses. As a result Sanlam contributed R100 000 for the plastering and painting of the houses.

MEC Mokonyane will don an overall and participate in the plastering and painting of houses that were recently handed over to the beneficiaries. She will also assist with the planting of trees in the area.

Letsema programme is an old tradition whereby members of a community help each other with tasks that are too difficult for one family, without requiring any favour in return. The primary objective of the programme is poverty alleviation and job creation.

The houses were built under the Peoples Housing Process (PHP), which is a housing programme that is aimed at supporting households who wish to enhance their subsidies by building or managing the building of their own houses. In Gauteng the programme requires the beneficiaries to be on a serviced site and have proof of ownership if they wish to benefit from the programme.

In addition, Sweat equity is another method of encouraging beneficiaries to participate in the construction of their houses by building the structure or providing support to other builders.

In the 2004/05 financial year the MEC announced that 20 food gardens will be established in 20 housing support centres and as a result service providers were appointed to establish food gardens.

In Kagiso Extension 12, Food and Trees for Africa was appointed to establish the food garden. The food garden in Kagiso has been established with ten community members working in the garden.
