22 June 2009 Municipality to introduce Property Rates Act
The ratings will be phased in over a period of three years. She said certain rebates will be applicable to certain property owners who qualify in accordance with the law. The district municipality which comprises of four different local municipality which are Merafong, Randfontein, Mogale City and Westonaria; will spend a total of R263million for the 2009/10 financial year. The Local Economic Development will get a total of R16million to increase business opportunities and improve infrastructure. "It is important for us to avail adequate resources to reduce poverty, create employment opportunities and ensure development of all areas" Matshikiza said. The Executive Mayor said an amount of R2million has been allocated for the implementation of HIV/Aids programme to fight the disease in the district. The municipality will also implement programmes that will assist the youth to have better opportunities. "It is important that we work hard to ensure that young people are able to find opportunities that will assist them to have a better life" Matshikiza said End

The West Rand District Municipality will for the first time implement the Municipal Property Rates Act, to ensure sustainable resource management and use. Executive Mayor of the municipality, Faith Matshikiza, announced during her municipal budget speech this afternoon. The Act will be implemented in accordance with the property rates policy adopted in February 2009.
