Housing and SAB Miller continues to fight against the abuseGauteng Department of Housing in partnership with SAB Miller handed over a renovated Eldorado Park Women Forum (EPWF) shelter, during this year's campaign of 16 Days of Activism Against the Abuse of Women and Children. Situated in Eldorado Park , south of Johannesburg , EPWF was established in 2000 to care for abused women and children and offers services such as youth and skills development. The shelter houses 122 women and 180 children and it is one of the 16 shelters identified by the department to be in dire need of either renovation or upgrade. SAB Miller adopted the shelter after heeding the department's call to assist in the renovation of the 16 identified shelters throughout the province. They donated money to plant a garden, paint, pave and do plumbing. Both housing and SAB Miller employees also helped with the renovation of the shelter. The SAB Egoli's regions Corporate Affairs manager Mandu Nkomo applauded the Gauteng Department of Housing for taking part in the 16 days of Activism campaign. Mandu said the rape statistics in South Africa are unacceptable and "we are here to show that we cannot tolerate such behaviour in our society". He continued: "We must all take a stand against the scourge of women and child abuse. Through SAB's Corporate Social Investment programme, we want to ensure that communities are better off. Today, we are not only making a donation to the home but our employees are also giving up their time to really get their hands dirty and make a difference." EPWF staff member Jeannette Mohammed thanked SAB Miller and Gauteng Department of Housing for renovating the shelter. Jeannette also acknowledged Gauteng Department of Social Development for funding them to run their programmes of supporting abused women and children. |
