Key Priority Programmes

20 Priority Township Programme (PTP)

The 20 PTP is aimed at providing and rehabilitating existing social and economic infrastructure in the previously marginalised 20 townships. In keeping with the Global City Region concept, 20 PTP focuses on exposing these previously marginalised townships to economic growth opportunities. At the end of this programme which is envisaged to run until 2009/10, all roads in these townships would have been tarred.

  • Kwatsuduza (KwaThema, Tsakane and Duduza)
  • Watville
  • Daveyton
  • Tembisa
  • Refilwe
  • Rethabiseng
  • Orlando and Zola

Municipal and departmental projects are at varying stages of implementation with key focus on:

* Tarring of streets

* The beautification of the townships

* Revamping schools, clinics and other abandoned buildings.

The department has planned 150 projects for implementation in all these townships in 2008/09 financial year with a major focus of unlocking the economic potential of these townships.
