MEC Nomvula Paula Mokonyane

MEC Nomvula Paula Mokonyane was born in Kagiso, where she matriculated at Masupatsela High School.

She has received training in Local Government and Planning Management and Community Development in Sweden. She completed a certificate course in Emerging Economics with the Wharton Business School at Pensylvania University and studied leadership and governance at Harvard University, both in the USA.

Mokonyane started her political activism in the early 1980s as a student activist. She was a member of the Young Christian Students (YCS) and a founder member of the Congress of South African Students (Cosas). She was the publicity secretary of the Krugersdorp branch of the United Democratic Front and an Organiser of the Federation of Transvaal Women (Fedtraw).

After the unbanning of political organizations in 1990, Nomvula was involved in the reestablishment of ANC and SACP structures.

She is currently a member of the ANC Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee, ANC Women's League National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee. She is also a member of the Central Committee of the SACP.
